Resolving Container Export Issues for Canadian Companies

/

ConeX Ltd recently supported a Canadian company that was facing a serious logistics issue involving a container shipment at the Port of Karachi, Pakistan.

Case Study Overview

We received an inquiry from a Canadian company regarding a container of used agricultural machinery exported from Japan that could not be picked up at the destination.

貨物はすでにパキスタン・カラチ港に到着していたものの、輸送書類の問題により通関手続きが進まず、コンテナを引き取ることができない状況となっていました。

In international logistics, such document-related issues can cause cargo to be held up at the port, and as time passes, additional costs such as port storage fees and demurrage may accrue.

ConeX Ltd acted as the point of contact in Japan, helping to assess the situation and coordinate with relevant parties to support the resolution of the issue.

Background: Challenges Faced by Foreign Companies When Doing Business in Japan

In this case, used agricultural machinery exported from Japan was shipped to Pakistan in containers.

However, after the cargo arrived at the local port, we were unable to take delivery of it due to issues with the documents required for import procedures.

In this case, a Canadian company purchased used agricultural machinery from Japan and shipped it to Pakistan.

For foreign companies, it is not easy to deal directly with exporters and affiliated companies in Japan.

In particular, the following issues may arise.

  • It is difficult to communicate with Japanese companies
  • It is difficult to understand how to handle shipping documents and business practices
  • Time zone differences and language barriers
  • We did not know who the right person to reach out to was.

In this case as well, although the cargo had arrived at the port, we were unable to collect the containers due to documentation issues.

Common Problems in International Logistics

In international maritime transport, a document known as a “Bill of Lading (B/L)” plays a crucial role in the collection of cargo.

Depending on the status of these documents and how they are managed, you may not be able to collect your cargo from the port even after it has arrived.

In this case as well,

  • The status of the shipping documents is unclear
  • Communication among the parties involved has broken down
  • It is difficult for foreign companies to negotiate directly with Japanese companies

A combination of these and other factors had led to a situation where cargo was piling up at the port.

Our Response

Conex Ltd. contacted the relevant parties in Japan directly to assess the situation and coordinate efforts to resolve the issue.

Specifically, we provided the following support.

・Check the status of the Bill of Lading

We checked the status of the shipping documents required for cargo pickup and identified the points where the process has stalled.

・Direct communication with Japanese counterparts

We contacted the relevant subsidiaries in Japan directly to confirm the status of document issuance and request their assistance.

By handling communication in Japanese on behalf of the Canadian company, we were able to move the situation forward quickly.

・Follow-up on document issuance

We followed up until the necessary shipping documents were issued and provided support to ensure the cargo pickup process proceeded smoothly.

・Advice on picking up your shipment

We also provided guidance on local procedures and assisted in ensuring that the container pickup went smoothly.

Results

Once the shipping documents were issued in Japan, the procedures at the Port of Karachi in Pakistan proceeded smoothly, and the container was finally released without incident.

As a result, the Canadian company was able to pick up the cargo locally, resolving the logistics issue.

In international logistics, cargo sometimes gets held up at ports due to documentation or procedural issues, but these problems can often be resolved quickly if the Japanese side handles them appropriately.
